The Law of Detachment

Friday's law from the Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga reminds to let go of our need to control outcomes, our attachment to our desires, and – perhaps most difficult – our need to control other people.

Here are a few affirmations you can repeat in order to practice this beautiful principle:
  • I consciously commit to flexibility and detachment.
  • I allow myself and those around me the freedom to be themselves, without imposing rigid ideas of right and wrong.
  • I live my life in a state of engaged detachment.
  • I release the need to judge or criticize.
  • I express myself honestly while releasing any need to impose my beliefs on other people.
  • Whenever I notice that I am becoming emotionally attached to a point of view, I take a deep breath and come back to a more centered place.
  • I embrace detachment by choosing to be free from the good and bad opinions of others.

Thoughts on Yoga

You cannot do yoga. Yoga is your natural state. What you can do are yoga exercises, which may reveal to you where you are resisting your natural state.

Being Flexible

“Water is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: what is soft is strong.”
— Lao Tzu

In your practice today, consider this: strength comes from patience and humility. You must live compassionately, toward yourself and others, in order to achieve peace. Namaste.

Relaxing the Mind

"If you work with your mind, instead of trying to change everything on the outside…that’s how your temper will cool down."

-Pema Chodron

Today, in meditation, sit quietly with yourself. Be gentle. Discover where there is tension, and where there is ease. See if you can let go.

Yoga at an early age is a great gift to give our children. It encourages compassion, cooperation and self-esteem. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. Yoga also encourages children to self regulate, providing them with tools to help calm their bodies, clear their minds and concentrate.

Our Lil' Soul Kids Yoga class is about exploring and learning in a fun, safe and playful way. We strive to support the development of creativity, cooperation, and confidence. This class is child-based and honors the innate intelligence that lies within every child, while taking into consideration the how the needs of children, differ from a those of adults. We offer a "nontraditional" yoga class for ages 3-7 that is both engaging and interactive, encouraging children to use their imagination as they embody the characteristics of familiar animals and objects. Classes include songs and stories and also support language and vocabulary development, number sequencing, social skills and science concepts, all with a Yoga twist as we learn to communicate with our words and our bodies.

Lil' Soul Yoga brings the marvelous inner light that all children have to the surface and lays the foundation for a lifelong practice.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old system of natural healing that has its origins in the Vedic culture of India. The Sanskrit translation of the word means "life-knowledge."

Our Soul Center’s approach to health and wellbeing fuses the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda with modern spa rituals. We offer ayurvedic lifestyle consultations and body rituals. We also teach the practical tools and techniques of Ayurveda at all of our programs and workshops

Although suppressed during years of foreign occupation, Ayurveda has been enjoying a major resurgence in both its native land and throughout the world. Tibetan medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine both have their roots in Ayurveda. Early Greek medicine also embraced many concepts originally described in the classical ayurvedic medicinal texts dating back thousands of years.

More than a mere system of treating illness, Ayurveda is a science of life. It offers a body of wisdom designed to help people stay vital while realizing their full human potential. Providing guidelines on ideal daily and seasonal routines, diet, behavior and the proper use of our senses, Ayurveda reminds us that health is the balanced and dynamic integration between our environment, body, mind, and spirit.

Recognizing that human beings are part of nature, Ayurveda describes three fundamental energies that govern our inner and outer environments: movement, transformation, and structure. Known in Sanskrit as Vata (Wind), Pitta (Fire), and Kapha (Earth), these primary forces are responsible for the characteristics of our mind and body. Each of us has a unique proportion of these three forces that shapes our nature. If Vata is dominant in our system, we tend to be thin, light, enthusiastic, energetic, and changeable. If Pitta predominates in our nature, we tend to be intense, intelligent, and goal-oriented and we have a strong appetite for life. When Kapha prevails, we tend to be easy-going, methodical, and nurturing. Although each of us has all three forces, most people have one or two elements that predominate.

The Law of Intention and Desire

The Law of Intention and Desire: Inherent in every intention and desire is the mechanics for its fulfillment. Intention and desire in the field of pure potentiality have infinite organizing power. When we introduce an intention in the fertile ground of pure potentiality, we put this infinite organizing power to work for us.

I will put the Law of Intention and Desire into effect by making a commitment to take the following steps:

  • I will make a list of all my desires. I will carry this list with me wherever I go. I will look at this list before I go into my silence and meditation. I will look at it before I go to sleep at night. I will look at it when I wake up in the morning.
  • I will release this list of my desires and surrender it to the womb of creation, trusting that when things don't seem to go my way, there is a reason, and that the cosmic plan has designs for me much grander than even those I have conceived.
  • I will remind myself to practice present-moment awareness in all my actions. I will refuse to allow obstacles to consume and dissipate the quality of my attention in the present moment. I will accept the present as it is, and manifest the future through my deepest, most cherished intentions and desires.

The Law of Least Effort

Nature’s intelligence functions with effortless ease . . . with carefreeness, harmony, and love. And when we harness the forces of harmony, joy, and love, we create success and good fortune with effortless ease.

We put this beautiful principle into effect by:
  • Practicing acceptance for what is.
  • Having accepted things as they are, we practice responsibility for our situation and for all those events we see as problems. We acknowledge that problems are opportunities in disguise.
  • We remain in defenselessness, relinquishing our need to defend our point of view.

The Law of Karma

At Serenity Spa/ Soul Yoga, we embrace the principles taught by Dr. Deepak Chopra in his hatha yoga style called The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga

Each day of the week, we focus on a specific principle to guide our thoughts and actions for the day.
Tuesday's principle is the Law of Karma.
Every action generates a force of energy that returns to us in like kind . . . what we sow is what we reap. And when we choose actions that bring happiness and success to others, the fruit of our karma is happiness and success.

You can put the Law of Karma into effect by making a commitment to take the following steps:

1. Today I will witness the choices I make in each moment. And in the mere witnessing of these choices, I will bring them to my conscious awareness. I will know that the best way to prepare for any moment in the future is to be fully conscious in the present.

2. Whenever I make a choice, I will ask myself two questions: “What are the consequences of this choice that I’m making?” and “Will this choice bring fulfillment and happiness to me and also to those who are affected by this choice?”

3. I will then ask my heart for guidance and be guided by its message of comfort or discomfort. If the choice feels comfortable, I will plunge ahead with abandon. If the choice feels uncomfortable, I will pause and see the consequences of my action with my inner vision. This guidance will enable me to make spontaneously correct choices for myself and for all those around me.

The Law of Giving and Receiving

At Serenity Spa/ Soul Yoga, we embrace the principles taught by Dr. Deepak Chopra in his hatha yoga style called The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga

Each day of the week, we focus on a specific principle to guide our thoughts and actions for the day.

Tuesday's principle is the Law of Giving and Receiving.

As a way to practice this encouraging principle, consider this:
Today, bring whoever you encounter a gift: a compliment or flower. Gratefully receive gifts. Keep wealth circulating by giving and receiving care, affection, appreciation and love.

In your yoga practice, introduce the practice of Karma yoga: selfless service.
