Lomi Lomi Massage

Photo via Pinterest.

Have you ever heard of a Lomi Lomi massage?

You may be familiar with traditional Swedish techniques, or maybe you like Deep Tissue work. If you're interested in experiencing a wonderful, unique and energizing massage, you will want to book a Lomi Lomi!

Lomilomi practitioners use the palms, forearms, fingers, knuckles, elbows, knees, feet, even sticks and stones. Lomilomi practices varied by family, Atahualpaʻa (traditional region) and island.
Traditionally in ancient Hawaii lomilomi was practiced in four contexts:
  1. As a healing practice of native healers -- kahuna lāʻau lapaʻau (healers) and kahuna hāhā (diagnosticians)
  2. As a luxury and an aid to digestion, especially by the ruling chiefs (aliʻi)
  3. As restorative massage within the family
  4. By ʻōlohe lua (masters of the Hawaiian martial arts)

When you book a Lomi Lomi massage with one of our specialists, you will experience a deep sense of balance and harmony inspired by the ancient Hawaiian “dance of massage." We use energy flow combined with fluid, fast-paced, rhythmic motion to achieve an energizing, rejuvenating experience.

There are many benefits to having a foot massage.
  • You relax. All the stress of your busy day melts away.
  • You improve circulation in the body by moving stagnant energy.
  • You increase the body's natural immunity and boost energy.
  • By stimulating more than 7,000 nerves in the feet, foot massage encourages the opening and clearing of neural pathways. It interrupts pain pathways, reducing pain.
  • Reflexology massage can assist with conditions such as allergies, asthma, insomnia, knee problems, stress disorders, respiratory problems, and thyroid imbalance.

Primordial Sound Meditation: June Weekend Retreat

At Serenity Spa, we offer instruction in Primordial Sound Meditation, a powerful meditation technique rooted in the Vedic tradition of India. Doctors Deepak Chopra and David Simon have revived this ancient practice of sound meditation and made it available in a format that is easy to learn.

Practiced for thousands of years, meditation is a tool for rediscovering the body’s own inner intelligence. Primordial Sound Meditation uses individually selected sounds of nature called mantras to disconnect us from the activity of life. These primordial sounds are based on the vibration the universe was creating at the moment of your birth. This is such a special gift and is yours for a lifetime. The mantra is sacred to you, and for you to hold deep within the heart. This is the mantra that you will use in all of your meditations and your meditation practice. We will need your birth date, time and place in order to retrieve your personal sound.

Practicing Primordial Sound Meditation on a daily basis will help you:
• Manage stress & reduce anxiety
• Create inner peace
• Improve your relationships
• Lower your blood pressure
• Enhance your sleep patterns
• Connect more deeply to spirit

Included in the Course:
• Personal Mantra
• Handbook / Guide for new meditators
• Meditation Door Hanger
• Pocket Guide to practicing the 7 Spiritual Laws of Success
• Certificate for a $100 Reiki Session for only $75

This month, we are offering a 2-day weekend retreat!

Getting the Most Out of Your Next Massage

Photos via Pinterest.

Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your massage experience.

  • Drink water before and after your massage, as your body will be flushing toxins.
  • Share accurate health information with your therapist before you begin your session.
  • Alert your therapist to any allergies you have.
  • Be open about discussing your expectations and any apprehensions you have prior to beginning your massage.

  • If at any time you feel discomfort or pain during your massage, let your therapist know immediately. Also feel free to provide feedback about pressure or speed of hand movement during the massage so that your therapist can adjust to your needs.
  • Relax and breathe during the massage. The more you can let go, the more effective the therapist's work will be.
  • Book a follow up appointment. Since the benefits of massage are cumulative, you will experience better results if you schedule yourself regular appointments.
  • Take the night off. You'll hold on to the benefits of the massage for longer if you plan a relaxing evening afterward.

The Health Benefits of Massage Therapy

Photos via Pinterest.

We all know that getting a massage is a great way to relax and let go of muscle tension. But the benefits go further. Research shows that massage can provide relief from back pain, headaches, osteoarthritis, cancer and anxiety.

"Massage is no longer just a stress-relief modality. People are seeking it as a preventative medicine for their health and for wellness," says Dr. Leena Guptha, president-elect of the AMTA, in an interview for Forbes magazine. "Some of the immediate benefits of massage are that it reduces heart rate and blood pressure, and increases blood and lymphatic circulation."

It's also important to note that peoples' reasons for getting massages have shifted toward overall health and wellness.

Check out these facts from the American Massage Therapy Association:
  • Instead of seeking massage therapy solely for relaxation and pampering purposes, individuals are turning to massage therapy to assist with medical conditions.
  • As few as 31 percent of individuals believe massage therapy is only a form of pampering.
  • 19 percent of respondents said they received a massage at a spa in the 12 months prior to the survey compared to 23 percent in 2011. This decline, and the presence of chiropractor’s offices, health clubs and physician’s offices/medical clinics on the list of locations where people receive massage, indicates consumers identify massage as an important component of overall health and wellness.
  • 50 percent of people have received a massage for one or more of the following reasons: soreness, stiffness or spasms, to relieve or manage stress, for prevention or to improve quality of life, injury recovery or rehabilitation, to keep fit or healthy/maintain wellness, or to control headaches or migraines.

Once you've considered the amazing benefits of massage therapy, you won't think twice about booking your next appointment. Here's to your health! Namaste.

Shirodhara

At Serenity Spa, we offer a variety of Ayurvedic treatments. One of these is shirodhara.

Shirodhara is a simple, yet profound treatment that works specifically on balancing and stabilizing the activity of the mind. Warm, dosha-specific herbal oils are beautifully streamed over the Ajna Chakra or third eye, taking the participant on a journey deep within. This helps bring balance to emotions and the mind, and is balancing to the nervous system, creating ecstatic feelings of relaxation and pleasure.

At Serenity Spa, we offer this 45 minute service for $90. Call our front desk at (916) 797-8550 or see our website to schedule an appointment.

Shirodhara is a form of Ayurveda therapy that involves gently pouring liquids over the forehead (the 'third eye'). It was developed by vaidyas (practitionars of Ayurveda) in Kerala, India for use in sukhachikitsa (restorative therapy) and can be one of the steps involved in Panchakarma. The name comes from the Sanskrit words shira 'head' and dhara 'flow'.

To read more about shirodhara, check out this article from the California College of Ayurveda.

What is Ayurveda?

 Photo via YogaCommunity.net.

Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old system of natural healing that has its origins in the Vedic culture of India. The Sanskrit translation of the word means "life-knowledge."

Our Soul Center’s approach to health and wellbeing fuses the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda with modern spa rituals. We offer ayurvedic lifestyle consultations and body rituals. We also teach the practical tools and techniques of Ayurveda at all of our programs and workshops

Although suppressed during years of foreign occupation, Ayurveda has been enjoying a major resurgence in both its native land and throughout the world. Tibetan medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine both have their roots in Ayurveda. Early Greek medicine also embraced many concepts originally described in the classical ayurvedic medicinal texts dating back thousands of years.

More than a mere system of treating illness, Ayurveda is a science of life. It offers a body of wisdom designed to help people stay vital while realizing their full human potential. Providing guidelines on ideal daily and seasonal routines, diet, behavior and the proper use of our senses, Ayurveda reminds us that health is the balanced and dynamic integration between our environment, body, mind, and spirit.

Recognizing that human beings are part of nature, Ayurveda describes three fundamental energies that govern our inner and outer environments: movement, transformation, and structure. Known in Sanskrit as Vata (Wind), Pitta (Fire), and Kapha (Earth), these primary forces are responsible for the characteristics of our mind and body. Each of us has a unique proportion of these three forces that shapes our nature. If Vata is dominant in our system, we tend to be thin, light, enthusiastic, energetic, and changeable. If Pitta predominates in our nature, we tend to be intense, intelligent, and goal-oriented and we have a strong appetite for life. When Kapha prevails, we tend to be easy-going, methodical, and nurturing. Although each of us has all three forces, most people have one or two elements that predominate.
