Soul Yoga offers a Kids Yoga class for Lil' Souls

Yoga at an early age is a great gift to give our children. It encourages compassion, cooperation and self-esteem. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. Yoga also encourages children to self regulate, providing them with tools to help calm their bodies, clear their minds and concentrate.

Our Lil' Soul Kids Yoga class is about exploring and learning in a fun, safe and playful way. We strive to support the development of creativity, cooperation, and confidence. This class is child-based and honors the innate intelligence that lies within every child, while taking into consideration the how the needs of children, differ from a those of adults. We offer a "nontraditional" yoga class for ages 3-7 that is both engaging and interactive, encouraging children to use their imagination as they embody the characteristics of familiar animals and objects. Classes include songs and stories and also support language and vocabulary development, number sequencing, social skills and science concepts, all with a Yoga twist as we learn to communicate with our words and our bodies.
Lil' Soul Yoga brings the marvelous inner light that all children have to the surface and lays the foundation for a lifelong practice.

Ashley Freeman, RYT is a mini yogi's certified instructor, has worked as a preschool teacher and holds an AA Degree in Early Childhood Education.

Our Lil' Soul Yoga classes are every 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month. Only $10 per student! Please call 9167978550 for more information.

Vata Season

In Ayurveda the fall season corresponds to two major doshas: Pitta and Vata. Autumn is considered Pitta as long as hot weather prevails, and Vata as it becomes cold. Late fall and winter are known as “Vata season” because they are marked by some of the same qualities that characterize Vata: cold, dry, light, clear, and moving.
As long as these qualities are in balance, a person whose dosha is predominantly Vata will be healthy, creative, and exuberant. But when too much Vata accumulates in the body and mind, the imbalance may manifest as physical or emotional disorders, including insomnia, dry skin, arthritis, constipation, high blood pressure, anxiety, and depression.
All body types are vulnerable to Vata derangement during autumn and winter, but those who are predominantly Vata types need to be particularly vigilant about staying in balance. Here are some practical ideas to keep you grounded and vibrant during the cold months ahead.
Follow a Vata-pacifying Diet
·                       Eat foods that are warming, fresh, and well cooked; avoid dry or uncooked foods (especially salads and raw fruits and vegetables).
·                       Drink lots of warming liquids such as hot water and herbal teas to prevent dehydration. You can prepare a fresh ginger tea by placing a teaspoon of fresh grated ginger into a pint thermos  bottle and filling it with hot water.
·                       Eat more of the sweet, sour, and salty tastes and less of the bitter, astringent, and pungent ones. Avocados, bananas, mangoes, peaches, lemons, pumpkins, carrots, beets, asparagus, quinoa, rice, mung beans, almonds, sesame seeds, and ghee are a few excellent Vata-pacifying foods.
·                       Don’t worry if your appetite seems stronger than usual as this is a natural tendency in winter and helps pacify Vata. At the same time, of course, don’t eat to the point of discomfort.
Nourish Your Senses
·                       Wear clothing made with soft fabrics in earth tones and mild pastel shades, which calm Vata.
·                       Stay warm. Vata is a cold, dry dosha, so it’s important to make sure that your home and work place are well heated and that the air has enough humidity. Since Vata is extremely sensitive to moving air, it’s wise to avoid drafts or sitting near fans or ventilators.
·                       Give yourself slow, gentle self-massage in the morning or before bed. Use a nourishing, warming oil such as sesame or almond. You may also want to gently rub a drop of sesame oil inside your nasal passages, which tend to become dry during winter.
Sleep and Restful Awareness
• Get enough sleep! This is vital for Vatas, who tend to push themselves to the point of physical or mental exhaustion.
• Learn to meditate. For the overactive Vata mind, meditation is one of the best ways to find calm and stillness. We recommend and offer instruction in a powerful practice called Primordial Sound Meditation, a mantra-based meditation rooted in the traditions of ancient India.

How to Release the Past and Return to Love

By Dr. Deepak Chopra

We have all experienced loss, heartache, and sorrow. Nobody wants to go through emotional pain, but it is an inevitable human experience. As the Buddha taught, we are each given ten thousand joys and ten thousand sorrows. The challenge lies in not getting mired in either the joy or the pain, keeping our hearts open and soft instead of closed and constricted. If we hold on to the hurts and wounds of the past, we start to accumulate emotional baggage − the dead weight of old experiences.
Freeing yourself from this emotional baggage is crucial because dwelling on the past prevents you from participating in the present, which is the only place in which you can experience love, happiness, fulfillment, and miracles.
Many people are hesitant to approach their inner pain and afraid to open old wounds. Yet it isn’t necessary to charge into a minefield, and you don’t have to brace yourself for a second round of hurt. By following the seven steps to emotional freedom, the healing process can unfold naturally, and when it does, you will experience relief and a surge of wellbeing
Take your time with each step, and don’t move on until you feel satisfied that the current step is working for you. For most people, it helps to have someone else join you in the exercise. Their presence provides reassurance that you aren’t alone or unsupported. If you have a therapist, you may want to ask him or her to support you in the process.
Step 1:  Recall an Emotion
With your eyes closed, recall an emotional experience that is causing discomfort. See the circumstances clearly and vividly in your mind. It could be an embarrassing experience or a personal rejection; the feeling could revolve around loss or failure.  Don’t generalize; be specific. You are recalling an emotional trigger. If your recollection is too uncomfortable, open your eyes and take a few deep breaths. When you feel less overwhelmed, close your eyes again and proceed.
Step 2: Feel Your Body
Notice where in your body this emotional memory has lodged. For most people, when they bring up a disturbing emotion, a physical sensation of tightness, stiffness, discomfort, or even pain will be felt in the stomach or around the heart. For a smaller number of people the sensation will be felt in the throat or head. Locate where your sensation is occurring.
If at first you don’t feel anything, relax, take a breath, and easily tune into your body. On rare occasions someone may feel numb, which is the sign of a deep emotion that has been tied to fear. But everyone eventually feels something in the body doing this exercise. Remember that an emotion is a thought connected to a sensation.
Step 3: Label Your Emotion
Now give your emotion a name. Is it fear or anger, sadness or resentment? Most people are surprised to find that they haven’t really labeled their emotions in the past. “I feel bad” or “I’m not having a good day” is as far as they get. Being more specific allows you to focus on the emotional baggage you want to release, so take the time to tell yourself exactly what you’re feeling.
To help you, here are the most common painful emotions that people carry around:
  • Anger, hostility, rage
  • Sadness, grief, sorrow
  • Envy, jealousy
  • Anxiety, fear, worry, apprehension
  • Resentment
  • Humiliation
  • Rejection
  • Shame
Step 4: Express the Experience
Take some paper and a pen and write down what happened during your painful emotional experience. Put down in detail how you felt, what other people did, and how you reacted afterward.
When you feel satisfied that you’ve expressed what the whole thing was about, take a second sheet of paper and retell the same incident from the other person’s point of view. Pretend that you are that person. Write down what they were feeling, why they acted as they did, and how they responded afterward.  This part is harder than writing down the incident from our point of view, but stick with it – you will be taking a big step in freeing yourself from the pain of the past.
When you are satisfied with what you’ve written, take a third sheet of paper and relate the same incident as a newspaper reporter would, in the third person.  How would an objective observer describe the incident in question? Give the details as objectively and evenhandedly as you can.
This step takes more time than the previous ones, but people enjoy it immensely. They discover that they are no longer trapped in their own point of view. They suddenly can call upon other voices in their head, a new set of eyes, a greater sense of detachment. It’s all very freeing.
Step 5: Share Your Experience
Now share your experience by reading your three accounts to someone else. In a group setting, which is how I normally lead the exercise, people are very eager to share, and the whole tone of the room is lifted, filled with excitement and laughter. The prospect of gaining emotional freedom from their past is exhilarating. So if you are doing the exercise at home, having a partner or a small group really enhances this step.
It works well on your own, however, if you have a good friend or family member you can telephone. Read them your three versions, making sure that they understand why you’re doing this process. It’s important not to share your experience whose actions provoked the emotional hurt you’re recounting. They won’t understand and usually won’t cooperate. Ninety percent of the time they won’t agree with your version of the event in question; in fact,  they might deny it even occurred. So stick with someone who is sympathetic and has your best interests at heart.
Step 6: Ritual of Release
Now it’s time to formally let go of your painful experience. Take your written stories and literally let them go. This is done through a ritual where you consign your past to the universe, God, or whatever higher power you recognize.  You should feel free to devise your own ritual. Set your paper on fire and throw the ashes to the wind or the sea. Some people burn them on an altar and others flush them down the toilet. You can also tear the paper to pieces and bury them in the back yard.
The ritual is important because it draws a line between your past and who you are right now. If you have fully expressed your old emotion, letting go feels very satisfying. But don’t try to force the release and be gentle with yourself. Release what you can today.  It’s normal and natural if you find yourself doing later releases around the same hurt.
Step 7: Celebrate Your Release
Once you have released your old story to the universe, celebrate your moment of liberation. You can do this alone or with others, just so long as you appreciate the step you’ve taken. I find that people often skip this step unless reminded. They don’t want to make their emotions a big deal, but in reality they are a big deal. Emotions can trap and bind you − and they can also set you free and change your future.
If you use this process consistently, you will eventually be able to release all of your old emotional pain, freeing yourself to return to your innate state of love, joy, and wholeness.

Choosing Happiness

Today, you have options. You can choose to let the little things get under your skin, and let your self be distracted by what's imperfect or frustrating. You could allow yourself to get caught up in the little things, or obsess over the past or the future.

Or, you could choose to live in the present. To become blissfully aware of what is beautiful in your life, and what you have to be grateful for.

You can choose to meditate on gratitude, on all that you love about your life. You can choose to remember you are beautiful. You can choose to follow your dharma, your true purpose in life. You can share peace, bliss and happiness with those around you.

The choice is pretty simple, don't you think?

Namaste.

Lomi Lomi Massage

Photo via Pinterest.

Have you ever heard of a Lomi Lomi massage?

You may be familiar with traditional Swedish techniques, or maybe you like Deep Tissue work. If you're interested in experiencing a wonderful, unique and energizing massage, you will want to book a Lomi Lomi!

Lomilomi practitioners use the palms, forearms, fingers, knuckles, elbows, knees, feet, even sticks and stones. Lomilomi practices varied by family, Atahualpaʻa (traditional region) and island.
Traditionally in ancient Hawaii lomilomi was practiced in four contexts:
  1. As a healing practice of native healers -- kahuna lāʻau lapaʻau (healers) and kahuna hāhā (diagnosticians)
  2. As a luxury and an aid to digestion, especially by the ruling chiefs (aliʻi)
  3. As restorative massage within the family
  4. By ʻōlohe lua (masters of the Hawaiian martial arts)

When you book a Lomi Lomi massage with one of our specialists, you will experience a deep sense of balance and harmony inspired by the ancient Hawaiian “dance of massage." We use energy flow combined with fluid, fast-paced, rhythmic motion to achieve an energizing, rejuvenating experience.

Witnessing the Super Moon

This weekend is the perfect time to set your heart's deepest intentions and desires and then release them to the universe.

The richness of the moon this weekend will bring healing energy and ignite the spirit within.

Gaze up at the sky tonight to catch a glimpse of a rare 'super' super moon, the huge perigee moon that will be shining brightly over this weekend.

The super moon which will occur tonight and on June 23, will appear to be bigger than the average full moon as it will be lined up with the sun perfectly so that the moon will appear to be brighter and bigger.

The moon will be at its closest point to Earth on June 23 at 7:32 a.m. EDT but will appear just as big tonight.

This weekend's supermoon is known as a "perigee" full moon, which means that it's orbit is closest to the center of Earth in a month. Full moons do not necessarily happen during a perigee but when it does, it means the sun, earth and moon align. Another super moon like this will not be seen until August 2014.

The perigee and full moon this month will only be an hour apart.

Sunday's super full moon means that the moon will be 221,824 miles away from Earth. The period where the moon orbits furthest from Earth is called an apogee. In an apogee, the moon is 30,000 further away from this point.

According to NASA scientists, this weekend's supermoon will appear 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than a regular full moon.

The best time to view the 'super' super moon will be around sunset and into the evenings on June 22 and 23 bearing that the night sky is clear and void of clouds.

Practicing Positive Karma

Today, as we do every Tuesday, we observe the principle of the Law of Karma.

Karma is the principle of cause and effect. It is summarized simply by the proverb “As we sow, so shall we reap.” If we plant seeds of health, harmony, and abundance, we’ll ultimately receive these beneficial fruits. On the other hand, if we sow seeds of anger, greed, or fear, such will be our harvest.

Karma isn’t about being punished or destined to suffer endlessly, as many people mistakenly believe. Instead, the law of karma offers us complete freedom, for we are the ones creating the results we experience. Some mysterious force or capricious god isn’t in charge, arbitrarily meting out rewards and hardship. If we don’t like the results we’re having, we are free to make different decisions.

Here are three ways the Dalai Lama suggests practicing good karma in life:
  • Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
  • When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.
  • Follow the three R’s: respect for self, respect for others and responsibility for all your actions.

Motivation for Yoga Practice

Do you have plans to do your yoga this week?

Maybe you feel exhausted, or overwhelmed. You're not sure if your practice will make your list of priorities.

Try this: roll out your mat tonight so it's waiting for you in the morning. As soon as you wake up, it will be there as a reminder that you're dedicated to taking time to nurture your mind, body and spirit.

Even spending 10-15 minutes in the morning doing sun salutations can shape your whole day. You deserve it!

Namaste.

Letting Go of Imperfection

Consider this: you have the choice to let go of imperfection. You even have the choice to embrace it. Suddenly, you are able to approach challenges with a sense of ease.

What if, instead of worrying about how perfectly you can execute a yoga pose, you expressed gratitude for the chance to practice today?

Ask yourself, as you move into the day: what can I detach from?

The Law of Intention and Desire

You exist, but do you live?

Today we are inspired by the Law of Intention and Desire: Inherent in every intention and desire is the mechanics for its fulfillment. Intention and desire in the field of pure potentiality have infinite organizing power. When we introduce an intention in the fertile ground of pure potentiality, we put this infinite organizing power to work for us.

In order to move toward fully realizing your intentions and desires, be present with them. Meditate. Visualize your dreams becoming reality.
